Jammin’ for the Hungry
Providing an extra “treat” to food bank customers to go with the USDA peanut butter.
Referral Broker Jon Polansky of Town & Country Realty has spearheaded relaunching Jammin’ for the Hungry, which is a community outreach program unique to the First United Methodist Church of Corvallis. The church makes this program possible by providing administrative support as well as use of their commercial kitchen.
The program began as a way to provide an extra “treat” to food bank customers to go with the USDA peanut butter that is regularly provided. Twice each month, volunteers make jams and jellies (sometimes fruit syrups or apple butter) for area food banks in the church’s commercial kitchen. Volunteers are from the church, the larger Corvallis community, and from OSU students in a class relating to sustainability. Fruit and all ingredients are provided by local donations, including from Stahlbush Island Farms and our regional food bank, Linn Benton Food Share. Since September 2008, volunteers have produced over 20,000 jars of jams, jellies, and syrups. Jon is especially proud that their jams contain less sugar than many other jams because of a special pectin (Pomona’s Universal Pectin) that the group uses.
